Imo Government will spend N8billion to dredge the Nworie River which covers a distance of about 7.5 Kilometers across Owerri municipality.
The river traverses four local government areas of Mbaitoli, Owerri North, Owerri Municipal and Owerri West.
The Imo Commissioner for Petroleum and Environment, Dr Aloy Aguwa, told newsmen in Owerri on Friday that the dredging would include associated approach roads and four bridges.
He said that the bridges would be sited at Nekede, two at Assumpta Road, Owerri, and another at Egbeada. Aguwa said that the contract for the dredging had been awarded to ROUDO Nig Ltd, which he noted, had moved to site.
According to the commissioner, the dredging will be completed in 24 months. He added that the Nworie River was a strategic waterway capable of stimulating water transportation and tourism in Imo.
''The river has over the years received gross pollution from private and public institutions in the state capital,'' he said.
He said the incessant discharge of untreated wastes into the river called for urgent dredging of the river and the entrenchment of sustainable waste management strategies to protect it from further pollution.
''The river has now lost its aesthetic and functional value hence the dredging,'' Aguwa added.
The commissioner described the scheme as a cardinal component of the Imo State Government's strategy toward realizing. ''The New Face of Imo project''.
''The project when completed will provides employment opportunities, increase internally generated revenue, reduce the level of pollution and improve the social and health standards of the area covered by the project,'' Aguwa said.
